At the grand finale of Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2024 (IEM Katowice 2024), Counter-Strike 2 prodigy Danil “donk” Kryshkovets led Team Spirit to a resounding 3-0 victory over FaZe Clan at Poland’s Spodek Arena on Sunday.

This win marked Spirit’s inaugural major championship in Counter-Strike, pocketing the coveted US$400,000 top prize and securing a berth in the upcoming IEM Cologne 2024.

The Russian squad, boasting an impressive record of 14 map wins and only one loss throughout Katowice, also secured spots in the BLAST Premier World Final 2024 and Esports World Cup 2024. Their journey in IEM Katowice commenced with decisive wins over Apeks and The MongolZ in the play-in phase.

Spirit continued their winning streak, defeating Natus Vincere 2-1, Complexity 2-0, and FaZe Clan 2-0 in the group stage, before eliminating Team Falcons 2-0 in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, FaZe Clan, after triumphing over Rebels Gaming 2-0 and Eternal Fire 2-1, faced defeat against Spirit in the quest for Group A’s top seed. Despite this setback, they rallied, sweeping G2 Esports and MOUZ 2-0 in the playoffs to earn a rematch against Spirit in the grand final.

In the opening map of the final showdown, Spirit dominated the CT side of Nuke, with the 17-year-old donk showcasing his prowess early on with an impressive 16 frags. Although FaZe retaliated, it was donk’s exceptional performance, accumulating 32 kills and a remarkable 132.4 average damage per round (ADR), that secured a 13-9 victory for Spirit.

Moving to Mirage, FaZe initially gained momentum with a 7-5 lead at halftime, led by Håvard “rain” Nygaard’s 12 kills. However, Spirit clawed back, eventually claiming a narrow 13-11 victory, with donk and Dmitriy “sh1ro” Sokolov leading the charge.

The final map, Overpass, saw no respite for FaZe as donk continued his dominance, culminating in a decisive 13-3 victory for Spirit. Donk’s stellar performance throughout the series earned him the Most Valuable Player award, with a tournament rating of 1.70, making him the highest-rated player in the history of IEM Katowice.
